Systems Administrator

35 hours per week

Systems Administrator role to work alongside the Senior Systems Administrator to configure, administer, and develop the server, telephony, and desktop infrastructure, whilst providing the point of escalation in resolving related incidents and changes logged by our Service Desk. 

As a Systems Administrator you will have key responsibilities in systems & data security; backup & recovery (as part of an overall Business DR plan); scheduled maintenance; and the documentation of the related systems and administration processes. The role will also liaise directly with third party suppliers and service providers, as well as having responsibility for administering hosted solutions. 

Resourcefulness is a necessary skill in this role. You should be able to diagnose and resolve problems quickly. You should also have the patience to communicate with a variety of teams and users, and be comfortable managing your own projects. Your goal will be to ensure that our technology infrastructure runs smoothly, efficiently and is kept up to date. 

Principle Responsibilities

  • Working to agreed SLA's to resolve incidents and problems relating to the IT infrastructure.
  • To successfully complete the maintenance, configuration and administration of the server and telephony infrastructure, including AD; group policies; DNS; DHCP; Email (via Exchange and 365); virtual hosts (via VMware); battery backup (via APC); enterprise SAN; file & print servers; backups and Anti-virus & web filtering software. 
  • Working closely with the Service Desk to ensure scheduled maintenance routines are followed.
  • Organise and administer file & print servers, user & security groups and policies in a logical and documented manner.
  • Administer hosted services such as email filtering, with the support of the service desk.
  • Assist and support the Service Desk team as necessary in the 2nd and 3rd line support in relation to system and desktop incidents.
  • Ensure the completion and monitoring of daily backup routines on all systems.
  • Administer user rights and permissions, as well as assisting in the implementation of patches and fixes. 
  • Liaise with 3rd party suppliers/ maintainers, particularly those for the Core Network and Firewalls.
  • Participate in business continuity planning.
  • Install and maintain the virtual environments for all servers, including development and reporting services running SQL, managing SAN provision to all hosts.
  • Constantly seek to identify and recommend ways to improve the systems, services and performance of the company systems infrastructure. 
  • Constantly look to train and provide mentorship to service desk analysts and staff.
  • Ensure all system documentation is in place and up-to-date.
  • Manage assigned project tasks from beginning to end within agreed timescales. 

Core Competences

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Systems Administrator, 3rd line support or similar role.
  • BSc/BA in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related discipline. 
  • Good working knowledge of Virtual Machines management.
  • Resourcefulness and problem-solving aptitude.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Personal integrity with the ability to ensure confidentiality of information, as governed by the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

Desirable

  • Professional certification e.g. Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA)
  • Database management and administration skills highly desirable.
  • Netapp or equivalent SAN knowledge and expertise.
  • On Premise Exchange and 365 knowledge.
  • Veeam configuration and management.
